Selling pressure continues on benchmark indices

Weakness persisted on the bourses in mid-afternoon trade as the key indices suffered steep losses as shares of key index pivotals dropped. At 14:20 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, was down 387.56 points or 0.98% at 39,064.51. The Nifty 50 index was down 111.25 points or 0.94% at 11,700.60. Private sector bank stocks were mixed. PSU bank stocks declined.

Trading for the day began on a negative note as domestic stocks edged lower in early trade on selling pressure in index pivotals. Key benchmark indices kept on extending losses thereafter on fresh selling in index pivotals.

Among secondary barometers, the BSE Mid-Cap index was down 1.04%. The BSE Small-Cap index was down 0.96%.

The market breadth was weak. On BSE, 625 shares advanced and 1765 shares declined. A total of 146 shares were unchanged.

Tata Steel (down 4.88%), Vedanta (down 3.24%), Axis Bank (down 2.30%), Bharti Airtel (down 2.25%) and Reliance Industries (down 2.12%), were the major Sensex losers.

Private sector bank stocks were mixed. Axis Bank (down 2.36%), Kotak Mahindra Bank (down 1.11%), IndusInd Bank (down 1.05%) and RBL Bank (down 1.04%), edged lower. While, Yes Bank (up 0.91%), HDFC Bank (up 0.55%) and ICICI Bank (up 0.41%), edged higher.

PSU bank stocks declined. Jammu and Kashmir Bank (down 2.13%), Bank of Baroda (down 1.89%), Allahabad Bank (down 1.32%), Bank of India (down 1.27%), State Bank of India (down 0.87%), Union Bank of India (up 0.34%), Oriental Bank of Commerce (down 0.16%) and Punjab National Bank (down 0.07%), edged lower. While, Syndicate Bank (up 1%), edged higher.

Divi's Laboratories was up 1.51% after the company announced that its unit-II at village Chippada, Bheemunipatnam District, Andhra Pradesh had an inspection by the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) from 10 to 15 June 2019. This was a general Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) inspection by the USFDA. The inspection has been concluded with no 483 observations.

On the macro front, India's exports were $29.99 billion in May 2019, as compared to $28.86 billion in May 2018, showing a growth of 3.93%. In rupee terms, exports were Rs 2.09 lakh crore in May 2019, as compared to Rs 1.94 lakh crore in May 2018, registering a growth of 7.36%. Imports were $45.35 billion (Rs 3.16 lakh crore) in May 2019, which was 4.31% higher in dollar terms and 7.76% higher in rupee terms over imports of $43.48 billion (Rs 2.93 lakh crore) in May 2018. The data was announced by the government after market hours on Friday, 14 June 2019.

Overseas, European shares were trading higher on Monday. Asian shares were mixed. Investors were cautious ahead of a closely-watched Federal Reserve meeting, while political tensions in the Middle East and Hong Kong kept risk-appetite in check.

US stocks ended lower on Friday, 14 June 2019, as investors turned cautious before this week's Fed meeting, while a warning from Broadcom on slowing demand weighed on chipmakers and added to U.S.-China trade worries.

In economic data, industrial production rose 0.4% in May, a solid and broad-based gain helped by increased production of pickup trucks and cars, the Federal Reserve said Friday. It was the strongest monthly rise in six months.
